    House prices fall

    THE slowdown in the housing market is continuing with the price of capital city homes down 1 per cent during the past three months.

    The Australian Bureau of Statistics today said Hobart led the downward movement with prices in the southern capital down 3 per cent during the September quarter.

    Sydney (down 2.3 per cent), Melbourne (down 1.5 per cent), Brisbane (down 0.9 per cent) and Canberra (down 0.2 per cent) all suffered price falls.

    Darwin house prices jumped 7.7 per cent, while Perth continued its love affair with real estate with house prices there up 3.1 per cent. Prices were up 0.7 per cent in Adelaide.

    Over the full year, prices nationally rose just 1 per cent.

    But it was Darwin (up 21.9 per cent) and Perth (up 17.7 per cent) that kept the national figure afloat.
    In Sydney, prices over the full year were down 4.7 per cent - the only capital city during the past year to suffer a real drop in prices.

    Melbourne prices were up 1.4 per cent, in Adelaide they were up by 4.2 per cent, in Brisbane they were up by 2.9 per cent, in Hobart they were up by 2.9 per and in Canberra they were up by 2.4 per cent.
