A company can’t just halt or suspend its stock from trading for no reason. It needs to have a reason and request the permission of the ASX to have its stock halted or suspended and it’s not to avoid volatility. It’s usually only granted when there is a process or a transaction that is incomplete and therefore that is not not ready for release to the market. By halting or suspending the stock it prevents individuals or entities who may have information about the process or transaction that is not in the wider market domain from trading based on that information to the advantage of the general market.
