The short answer to that is that the entire cost of R&D needs to be factored into the sale price. Ergo, the more you sell the less each unit needs to cover. We're talking many millions of dollars though so a reasonable chunk would need to be recovered ultimately. Sales is the only positive line on a P&L statement - all the rest (more or less) are negatives...
