Two deaths in under two weeks at the same mine certainly raises questions. However, I am not prepared to act as judge and jury but certainly hope there is a full investigation by the PNG authorities. I do not know their system but generally they follow Australian procedures and so action by the PNG body responsible for workplace safety is definitely called for with a coroner's inquiry as well. COVID-19 rules may make it difficult for the company to send in people for their own investigation and raises the question as to whether management at the mine has been diluted/down-graded over the past 14 months as a result of COVID. The most important issue is - what is the company going to do to improve things as an urgent matter?
