Ethically, I wholeheartedly agree with you.

Historically, humanity/society etc has always used tragedy, hardship and suffering to their advantage in one form or another so you may as well be on the winning side rather than the losing one (layman's terms)

I recommend reading some literature on the illusion of freedom as I feel that the philosophical concept may play a part in your current perception. The aforementioned is off-topic and I apologize to the hotcopper police but feel that it needed to be said.
