I remember years ago seeing a long news story on South Korean shipbuilding industry and how they are world beaters and their welders are highly skilled and were highly paid, earning about $70K back then. I suspect they may have been the first to build ship in parts then weld together with precision. South Korea is in a population death spiral and so they need to automate like there's no tomorrow.
