I don't expect every residential builder to have one. Each HX will be able to build around 100 homes a year, it will only make sense for a builder / building company to own one if they build that many block houses a year - so your builder who does half a dozen will never have a use for one. If you build 100 houses a year - $2m isn't that much money. And if the HX makes solid business sense - bank loans for business that size for $2m are pretty easy for a business to come by.
It'll take a while until the market adjusts, but the economics would IMO stand up for companies to own an HX as a standalone business and do the brick work for a builder. Assume 5k profit per house after maintenance and running costs. 100 houses that half a million per year - so you wouldn't even need to have it in use all the time for it to be profitable.
By having accurate measurements beforehand / everything square and to size, ordered pre-construction to save time building, in Australia you are talking about saving 2-5k in bank interest by it going faster, 5-25k in materials savings by not having to get everything custom made for an average size home (possibly more if you go for higher end finishes - a lot depends however on the design / layout how much custom stuff you need). Also less headache from brickies / builders / other trades screwing up, blaming the architects / plans / unclear instructions / their dog or their sports team. It's pretty hard for an electrician to put a light switch in the wrong spot if it's pre-routed or to argue they didn't know a power socket was supposed to go somewhere when the routing exists.- likewise their job is easier by not having to do this themselves.
As much as some have come on here and spoken about pre-fab in the past or other techniques, the idea of a factory precise HX home with pre-fab fixtures and fittings will always make more economic sense than a pre-fab home with custom made fixtures and fittings to fit the odd sizes or angles or other screw ups.
Even if the price worked out even for an entire house - which I struggle to see how considering the potential savings after block work is completed. I'd pick the HX over traditional methods because machines don't deviate from plans or take shortcuts - having a house built is stressful enough... and I suspect there are plenty in the same boat as me.
