I don't think you're missing anything.
I guess it depends on our assumptions. Will an offer be made by BP in USD? or does IMU (and it's shareholders) ask for a price in AUD$.
I would assume that if BP were to make an offer, it would be based on what they think IMU is worth and most likely in USD.
It's not like IMU is sitting on a shop shelf for sale in AUD for $X. If that were the case, your assumption would be accurate.
In other words, BP don't care what our currency is doing as they would calculate how much they will pay in USD.
Should we be lucky enough for that to happen, IMU shareholders will be better or worse off depending on AUD vs USD at that time.
