Kavita Vedhara, a professor of health psychology at the University of Nottingham, is studying more than 3,000 UK adults to see if raised cortisol increases the risk of severe Covid-19.“Last year a couple of studies suggested that imbalance of cortisol may make people more vulnerable to contracting Covid-19 and suffering serious symptoms,” she says. “People who contracted the virus and were hospitalised had on average three times higher levels of cortisol than those who caught the virus but did not suffer severe symptoms. It may be that having chronically elevated cortisol levels in the first place puts people at greater risk of infection.”
