I think he mainly wants to save lives. If your job involves eyeballing parents you have to give the bad news to, or just watching a child slipping away, or seeing time and again loss of life when you KNOW there's a technology with a very good chance of saving them, that's a powerful motivator.

Of course money is a fine thing to gain in the process. I just don't think everyone has been hit by the mendacity and greed stick. I know it's important to me to be able to look at myself in the mirror and think 'you're ok as person'. Of course there are 5% narcissists/sociopaths out there. Possibly over represented in the trading/corporate/HC posting world.
