Not sure what you think they can do. The market is swinging wildly with no rationale is a self perpetuating cycle of bullcrap.
A fund manager can easily go to cash at the wrong time, sell near the bottom and then miss a 20% rise.
IMHO all you can do is trim the more speculative companies to put more into the good ones, especially the ones with strong balance sheets.
If there a serious economic downturn then balance sheet = win.
