Tremocos I spent considerable time and money on the Rand trying to set up a deal to operate my big gravity plants to recover billions of dollars of gravity recoverable gold with a world first technology I used to recover significant gold here on WA mill sites. The gold on the Rand is still there -huge potential - but you know why -the DMR is the most hopeless regulatory governing body of any mining industry on the planet - most of the old mill sites and mines have illegals swarming over them with the attendant risks -many of the underground mines and mill sites have heavily armed criminal gangs stealing the gold - and murders and extortion are an every day event --Yet still listed juniors spin the same story to investors about vast riches they are going to deliver for their shareholders. One on AIM doing that right now -
I could go back years-- Mintails and many other companies -all went broke - and in the process took down a few high profile investors in Perth too. One company is successful DRD Gold -very successful - so not saying it cant be done - but not sure though how they stay alive.
In Zambia we acquired a manganese project at Ndola with an AIM listed company I listed in 2005. I liked the project - significant tonnages of high grade manganese. Only one problem we discovered three other entities also owned the project. Typical Africa - depending who went to the Mines Dept in Lusaka as to what map and documentation was pulled out of a drawer . Want me to go on -you can chase birds all over Africa mate but with no security of tenure getting one into the cage is the trick.
Of course there are some great mines in Africa - we could discuss the pros and cons to the cows come home -its high risk high reward . Tshipi is a fabulous mine but the only reason that works like clockwork in my opinion is the Brian Gilberston factor. Let's see if that lasts -for my money iron ore in Australia beats manganese in South Africa hands down.
