I don’t think they’re referring to Li metal. Yr right though it’s always LCE , or Lithium Sulphate( as Lithium hydroxide , really plus monohydrate for better transport).
Both Li2CO3 and LiOH are not used in Li-ion cells themselves but rather are used as precursors to produce other lithium compounds.
As well both Li2CO3 and LiOH are divided into different grades depending on quality, many for medical, industrial purposes. Only highest grade for high performance Li-ion batteries.
