Amateurs like you or me would try to squeeze the price down and end up attracting huge waves of buyers. These bots are holding the price but at a low level and not enabling it to rise either. If the price is held at a low level but within a narrow band the buyers would just hold back to see where it breaks out and the sellers could lose heart and think it is better to get out when its languishing but steady rather than when in freefall.
