the NaCl and Kainite will have different specific gravities so one will be able to be floated off of the other as the lighter solution is flowed off into a second pond and therefore the brine in the second pond becomes more concentrated in one or other of the salts

But anyway the table specifically states Kainite as the feedstock not brine and as you can see there is no Na in the Kainite chemical formula above so the Na:K ratio is not relevant .

I believe it's done by crystallization. As in, when a solution becomes more chemically saturated through evaporation one compound will tend to 'drop out of solution' and crystalize.

That's my interpretation and could be wrong.
