"Employers say the federal government’s proposed “same job, same pay” labour hire laws risk exacerbating workforce shortages, driving up food prices and creating a “massive compliance bomb for business”...

...Employers responding to the government’s consultation paper on the proposed laws are seeking to narrow their scope and delay their introduction by pushing to have them subject to a transition period.

In a submission seen by The Australian, the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry says the basis for the laws is flawed, and the definition of labour hire under the scheme should be narrow and exclude service providers, recruitment and placement services, contracting arrangements, and group training organisations.

“This policy will have significant ramifications for the Australian economy. The policy has the propensity to serve as a severe impediment to the use of labour hire in Australian businesses, which will exacerbate workforce shortages,” the chamber says.

“Contrary to the assumptions of the critics of labour hire, reduced usage in labour hire will not result in an increase in direct employment by host companies..."
