iPSCs are human cells grown in the lab, that have been reprogrammed so they can develop into all cell types of our body. The technique offers tremendous potential for future therapies as they provide an unlimited supply of cells that can be turned into a desired cell or tissue type.
LUMC Transplantatie Centrumis the first in Europe to administer a therapy derived from these 'magic cells' after a kidney transplant. Together withCynata Therapeutics, the researchers turned the iPSCs into mesenchymal stromal cells, that have the ability to slow the immune system and prevent organ rejection.
Siebe Spijker: "This is a phase 1 study, primarily focused on testing the safety of this innovative therapy. The emphasis lies on the fact that this is the first time in Europe that a therapy derived from iPSCs is being used in patients with a transplanted kidney." The therapy is a fantastic first step towards future iPSC-based treatments in theLeiden University Medical Center.
