"At this rate we will have our own Australian version of Brazil's favelas"
Back in the old days (1950s and 60s) we did have the Australian version of a favela. We would build a small garage with our own two hands on our plot of land and live in that. Councils did not plague us with a litany of expensive to adhere to regulations that require mortgaging one's life away for.
People were happier back then than people living in today's McMansions.
Leave people be, to live life their way, and they will be happier.
The first nations people were happier living life their way before Captain Cook arrived. We should have left them to their lean too's and their traditional medicine . . . and not have tried to assimilate them to white man's culture.
Sometimes when you try and help someone by continuing holding their hand, they will remain weak and will never be able to cope on their own. Their is a certain pride in being able to accomplish something on our own, without leaning on others.
I speak with the experience of having gone from rags to riches a couple of times, having to sleep on a piece of cardboard with other homeless in a pedestrian railway tunnel in Sydney, and having lived 15 months in an impromptu "refugee" camp for displaced stateless people, with no running water or electricity, living soley off what could be scavenged from the surrounding jungle, including jungle medicine.
