I had options in another company once that were about to expire. The company devised a scheme to keep them alive post expiry... it was with a loan from the company to borrow the money to pay for the option excercise. They charged interest on the loan at various interest rates. The loan was for about 2 years.
there was no recourse on the loan if you decided not to pay the money back... you just handed back the shares to the company, and lost whatever interest you paid them.
