Late last year Cyprus cabinet approved a guide for the creation of small desalination units by private individuals. The units could help meet water needs of groups of farmers, hotels, golf courses, water parks and other businesses affected by the drought.
The guide provides for the creation of desalination units with capacity up to 1,500 cubic metres (1.5m litres) daily. Cyprus (alongside other southern Mediterranean countries) is projected to face increased water shortages in the future due to climate change, a recent Joint Research Centre (JRC) technical report warned.
There are numerous opportunities to utilise the credit facility, particularly with resorts where capex may otherwise be prohibitive.
