"China has launched its long-awaited national emissions trading scheme, taking the first tentative steps towards putting a price on carbon and continuing efforts to clean up its heavily polluted skies.

"While this is a big step down from a planned eight economic categories when the scheme was first envisaged, the Chinese carbon market will still rank as the world's largest.

"China is sending a signal that pollution will not be free anymore," said Li Shuo, a climate policy adviser at Greenpeace China via phone from Beijing.
