He never put his hand in his pocket to buy a single share as far as I can remember. Just waited for the 'out of the money' option expiry each year or two and got a refresh at the new low mark he had been responsible for. Obviously paid way too much 'cause the hunger was not there to manage the business and expenses as if he was a business owner. BoD should have insisted he own a certain % of his salary in shares as other good businesses do to align interests with shareholders.
Needed to go and yes one or two years ago, IMO.
