Additional interview with Fluence Italy Michele Ceccaroni on Latin America opportunities.
Fluence participates in the consolidation of two biogas plants this year for 4.5 MW and is already planning new business in the country
June 06, 2019
By Nanda Singh
Within the framework of the International Meeting on Technology of Waste Conversion in Energy Strategic Energy Argentina spoke with Michele Ceccaroni, Sales Engineer for Fluence Italy.
What major markets in Latin America is Fluence looking at?
Of course, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Peru. But also all those markets that have a high cost of electricity-up to US $ 80 MWh-, a high cost to dispose of the sludge or simply those that are careful of the environment and want to continue the development of this generation technology.
What business prospects do you identify in this country?
There are many good opportunities in Argentina. When increasing the cost of electricity and the cost also of natural gas, the price of bioenergy -with or without the RenovAr- at 80 or 100 USD $ / MWh is competitive to install an anaerobic digestion plant and possibilities to develop interesting projects
In addition, it is noteworthy that the projects that participate in the RenovAr can have an economic return to fewer years. The fact that they have opted to continue the auctions speaks well of the process and gives confidence to the market.
Participate for the moment of 2 RenovAr projects, what are they?
With these projects we have secured up to now 4.5 megawatts. One belongs to a refrigeration industry and can produce 5 to 7 days a week, it is the 1.5 MW ArreBeef project; and the other one, from the citrus industry, is the 3 megawatt Citrusvil project, which can generate about 6 months per year -because of the seasonality of the industry-. Both projects were awarded in RenovAr round 2.
What comparative advantage do you offer in your biogas solutions?
We make a high-level controlled and automated industrial product while our competitors have anaerobic gaps, which are an old system that is not controlled.
Did you encounter any barriers in Argentina?
I believe that we must continue working to change the philosophy of biogas in the eyes of the industry. It is the case that plants in the food industry do not plan to install a biodigester or start an anaerobic digestion treatment, because perhaps they relate this process more to agricultural substrates such as cereals and manure. Here the biogas has a lot of valuable material and it is necessary to carry out an intelligent management and take advantage of it.
These issues were discussed at the International Meeting on Technology of Waste Conversion that Fluence organized in Argentina, what is the outcome of the event?
We have managed to have many guests from all industries and we are very pleased with the result.
Of course, the most important message we want to give and that was given today in the talk was that the wastewater treatment plant is not going to be an expense but it is going to be a profit. Thanks to the primary sludge that is a hazardous waste and thanks to other by-products, energy can be generated today in a way that changes the economic equation of a plant.
Do you see interest RenovAr 4?
Yes, but in this case small companies would be outside and we have talked with those who have projects of 1 or 2 megawatt. Now, if we think of an industry with more potential to generate biogas, of course we are talking about a set of industries, some cooperatives or a dairy industry chain where you can have very valuable permeate. There, the key would be to gather more industries in the same anaerobic treatment plan.
Are you talking to new potential customers?
We are talking now with other meat and poultry meat coolers too, as these can produce 5 days to 7 days a week throughout the year and, depending on the size of the industry, from a mega to two.
On the other hand, we are also talking with companies that have projects with serum permeate that could reach up to 7 megawatts.
