I'm also new and while I prefer a dividend (or more likely in BRKs case return of capital given large accumulated losses) all the presos I have read suggest buy backs. My preference is because I think for resource stocks with finite lives the ultimate end price will be zero, so it is better to return capital to shareholders. But if the assets are long life and share price is at low fcf multiples then some boards favour that approach.
