Log the core photos etc, cut it in half, one half gets crushed and milled for the lab the other half is stored (archived). The milled rock at the lab is a fine talcum powder. It is split and then assayed for whatever you want. At a mine i.e. Olympic Dam we roll over the process every 12 hours, i.e. Gold copper and uranium. No hurry for the exploration stuff so that can be months - but could be done in days ( may be some government regulation around PACE drilling though, i.e. The public servants may like to roll out of the office for a field trip to look at the core). To get a public servant out of an office may take weeks as there will be travel and accommodation to get approved, but as a wise person already said " I ain't no accountant" ..
