AUSTRALIA NEEDS AN APOLLO PROGRAM: NATIONAL R&D CHALLENGES

Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. It can also be converted into a renewable and non-polluting zero emissions energy source to power vehicles and industry. It has the potential to unlock a new Australian export, power parts of Asia and provide grid stability domestically.

The challenge with hydrogen up until now, is that it is difficult to store and transport, and that's what makes last week's announcement by CSIRO so profound. CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, has developed a membrane that allows hydrogen to be stored and transported in ammonia and then converted back to high-purity hydrogen at, or near, the point of use. The approach would leverage existing ammonia infrastructure here and around the world, reducing the financial risk associated with establishing the industry. It's an important breakthrough that the country needs to repeat.

Some scientific discoveries – like the CSIRO's hydrogen membrane – pave the way for new economic, societal or environmental impact and can change the course of countries and the world. ....
