They've been doing plenty in other areas and added a few hundred thousand ounces over the last 12 months with very little spare cash due to the Red October mine underperforming.
This announcement seems to be designed to let people know the 600koz target is in addition to the current 874koz jorc resource held by MAT.
It is just letting everyone know they could have around 1.5moz in the future, so to look ahead rather than at the recent past troubles.
I'm not sure how this news is price sensitive though as it seems more like a marketing promotion to me.
