The US for some time has been working with a satellite based Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment.
As far as we are concerned, amongst other things it appears to be capable of dynamically mapping deep groundwater and since our coals contain water we may be able to use it in tandem with geological & other data.
The resolution of the system is constantly improving and it occurred to me that eventually we may be able to view CBM dewatering on it.This link gives an example of the system being applied:
