I partially agree with you in as much as we will (and should) always have an extensive R&D budget for new products.
However, it is important to convert products to profitability as soon as possible to avoid unsustainable cash burn and to have income that can be reinvested in R&D.
Not all products need to be profitable, but the company needs to achieve profitability and/or substantial capital growth (such that new funding is raised at a higher price than existing capital). If not then shareholder investments just get wiped out
