@MarsC, here is my thought. Invariably bull market will come to an end at some stage and ETFs will lose some money- but again after a few years bull market will raise and ETFs will shine. As long as you hold either a broad based ETF or a managed fund (well managed, mind you) long enough you will make money - at least that is the theory. Just that it takes effort to find a well managed fund and then there are other associated risks such as losing key persons/ divorces ending in sell offs/ scandals etc ..Where as broad based ETFs are easy to pick and 80% of the time beats managed fund. Is it 2 or 3 Nobel prizes behind the concept of index funds- I always forget.
All said, writing off a broad based index fund is difficult
