Held both PTM and MFG funds over the years (around 3-4 in total from memory), and for the same reasons you gave. Sold out for essentially zero profit after being disappointed that the reality didnt match the pitch. ETFs definitely the way to go, the entire managed fund paradigm seems out-of-date now. I suppose some investors continue to hold the stock based on management fees generating a return for the company, but given monthly outflow data over the last 2 years even this seems a dubious argument now.
