Kipling would have known, of course, that Brazil was further east.

And for your greater interest, here is another Kipling poem. Written when his son was lost to the guns of WW1.

Note that the word 'tide' has two meanings. One meaning 'time' and the other 'a current'
It all illustrates the richness of Kipling's mind - and of the English language.
