I'm no expert so can't say for sure. But I always assumed it was the buy/sell dates, so when it came up in this thread I went to the ATO sight and the above is what I found. I could be miss reading it or something but that's how it seems to me.
Re something going wrong, I can't really think of anything that is likely to happen.
Regardless, my reading of the ATO sites is that they go off they buy/sell date.
I'm no expert so can't say for sure. But I always assumed it was...
