Underground mining is planned for Kathleen Valley (Lionstown LTR) once the shallow ore is extracted via open pit. Same with Core Lithium (CXO) at Finniss.
There are big advantages to underground mining with lithium and that is because there is a massive amount of surrounding rock that must be removed. An underground miner can just pluck out the spodumene using an underground set-up.
My highly respected colleague @anatol predicted very recently that "LTR in transparency would deposit a horrendous one billion tonnes of waste on surface if they’d mine KV via open pit, however by going predominantly underground, that’s reduced by a whopping 95% to just 50mt."
PLS has 6 open pits and you can see from the diagram below what a struggle it is to offload the waste let alone dig it up:
