The guys planning this are not new to mining. One of the questions they should have asked before even putting a drill bit into the ground is whether a sensible mining plan was possible if they hit something.

I'm just guessing here, but North Aubry is arond 40m higher than Central / South Aubry. Some of the "depth" of an open pit mine would appear to come from removing this height difference (cut into the hill, rather than dig a hole). This would however mean that rock is being moved in the gap between South Aubry and North Aubry. This is exactly the area they are now drilling to understand what's there. This is probably for the duel purpose of seeing if there is lithium bearing pegmatite there, and also to understand the underground geology better if pit logistics require digging there.

As noted, both Core and LTR have plans involving an open pit that transitions to underground mining.
