I suspect that whatever ideology, if any, we choose to hang our hat on, the question of "wage slavery" will be settled eventually, as is so often the case, by the continuing march of technology. And then the question will be how we ensure society doesn't become polarised by the owners of the new "slaves" (robots) and those that have been displaced by them.

If that question is settled adequately, then the question of whether we all become truly free citizens (free from slavery, manufactured consent, manufactured desires, fears, emotional needs, isolation etc) will be one of whether or not we become free from the enslavement of our own minds.
