Rain could be on its way: forecasters
11:49 AEST Wed Jun 8 2005
AAP
It has been a long, long wait, but it may finally rain in south-eastern Australia this weekend.
Falls of up to 30 millimetres are expected through much of Victoria and south-east NSW.
Some farmers have already started sowing seeds in anticipation.
Bureau of Meteorology senior forecaster Scott Williams said rain bands were expected on Friday, with heavier falls on Saturday.
"The first couple will be fairly light, but Saturday there's an opportunity for some significant falls in the 10-25mm range through much of Victoria and indeed south eastern Australia," he told ABC radio.
"And I don't think it will necessarily be over then as the low progresses further east.
"There's a pretty good chance of more follow up rain as we get into early next week."
Mr Williams said falls of up to 30mm were likely over the ranges but less was expected over the Mallee and Wimmera areas, in north and western Victoria.
"(30mm) is a possibility but it's probably at the upper end as far as the flatter country is concerned," he said.
"I think that's fairly likely over the ranges of the north-east (of Victoria) but in terms of the Mallee and the Wimmera, it's not impossible to get totals that high but I'd be punting more like 15 (mm) I think for the event on the Friday and Saturday."
And he says the rain could represent a change in weather patterns.
"This could see a change in the weather pattern and we may well get into a more normal winter rainfall pattern through south-eastern Australia after this," he said.
"Certainly the high pressure that's been dominating to the east of us is going to break down completely over the next week so that could be good news for the latter part of this month as well."
