There was an article few years ago in Scientific American mentioning long term "Band of rain" is shifting north, Australia could be fall out from the band of rain in next 50 - 100 years by the rate of the shifting as the global temperature warming up, as northern hemisphere warming up faster than southern hemisphere, the evaporation and rain cloud formation shifting towards the northern hemisphere. but the climate change could be disrupting the pattern in short term, and may speed up the shift in long term.
