One of the problems of holding gold in the ground is it might not actually be there.
Our belief in ore resources and reserves stems from sampling methods that whilst statistically rigorous are still prone to error, fraud. Thre are also other problems like ore being sterilized by pit wall or tunnel collapse.
That being said I'd argue its better than bit coin of NFT's! (as some may find out to their chagrin).
BTW. There is some argument as to whether the amount of gold claimed to be in fort Knox is actually there but I will let that one go.
