I've commented substantially in the past on Nearmap and Spookfish, and your comment on ESRI and QGIS is encouraging. My take has always been, as a former heavy user of Nearmap, that the very high margins Nearmap charged was ripe for competition, and this aerial photography is so valuable for commerce, govt and recreational/private use that it's important to be affordable. And the cheaper it is, the more organisations can afford it. So AMX should theroretically increase the market size. If they end up with a quarter to a third market share of an Aussie market of around $100M to $150M per annum, plus billing $10M to $20M in LIDAR, surely they should be able to make a good $5M to $10M profit in future. Having procured some project aerial photography in the past, which seemed quite fiddly, I can understand why they were keen to move to cloud based offering.
