Gas prices and coal prices went up substantially in the period after the Ukraine/Russia war started. This led to higher energy and electricity prices globally and not just in Australia. The higher wholesale electricity price in Australia is the biggest driver of recent higher retail prices.
There are other drivers like poor performance at some coal plants causing outages and supply coming out (Liddell) but most of higher prices is due to higher gas and coal prices.
You can't say that is a "story" that you don't believe.
