I recall under Australian Corporate Law shareholders can call a general meeting and eventually obtain a court order instructing companies who sit on large piles of cash to distribute that cash to shareholders.
I have no idea what is in NZ corporate law, but if the same provisions exist, and I think they would, large shareholders could call a general meeting any time and basically force distribution of cash to shareholders. But this has not happened so the larger players are happy for a2 to sit on the cash, so we smaller players are stuck with this strategy.
Clearly the larger shareholders would also not agree to changing the board over this issue.
