I've just had a look at this again. According to what Qantas has published, they've ordered 29 new A220s, and these are to replace the Boeing 717s. In the 2024 Annual Report their fleet comprised just 2 A220s by that date, and 11 retired 717-200s, with 9 remaining. Assuming all new A220s are matched against 20 retiring/retired 717-200s, they will have net 9 additional planes, which could potentially be put to use replacing other aircraft in their fleet.

How long will it take to deliver all 29 new A220s? Will any of them replace the need for Qantas to wet lease Alliance's E190s? Will new opportunities and routes open up for either airline for aircraft to be put to use on (e.g. Rex, Bonza). I don't have all those answers, but Alliance is strong on the FIFO routes and that continues.

I don't know whether Qantas will dump Alliance shares, but they can probably get a better price by holding for the time being (my sentiment too!)
