Roche has signed a deal with Warp Drive Bio to use the biotech’s tech platform to search bacteria that live in soil for potential antibiotics with new mechanisms of action. The new deal is said to be notable for its focus on novel, natural classes of antibiotics that hit drug-resistant, Gram-negative pathogens.
It has been 30 years since the last novel class of antibiotic was discovered and developed – daptomycin (Cubicin) was derived from a soil sample from the dormant volcano, Mt Ararat.
The Roche deal provides for an upfront, option fees and and pre-clinical milestones of $87 million, with a further $300 million in potential clinical, regulatory and sales milestones.
