IQE - RESOLUTION TO DIVE SCHOOL COURT PROCEEDINGS
A subsidiary of Intueri Education Group Limited, the New Zealand School of
Outdoor Studies Limited which trades as the New Zealand School of Commercial
Diver Training (NZSCDT), has advised that it has received the judgement of
the District Court released on 29 February 2016, after pleading guilty to one
charge laid by WorkSafe New Zealand under the Health and Safety in Employment
Act 1992, in relation to a student fatality that occurred at NZSCDT in April
2014.
NZSCDT will pay reparation of $125,000 to the family and contribute $25,610
towards their costs, in addition to incurring a fine of $53,625. Intueri has
previously taken a provision in its accounts for likely penalties.
CEO of Intueri, Rob Facer, said: "This was a tragic incident where a young
man lost his life and we again extend our sincere condolences to the family
of Mr Moien.
"Safety is our primary concern. NZSCDT has run thousands of dives without
incident in its 15 years of operation and continues to adopt systems and
practices to continually improve health and safety throughout its activities.
"We recognise it is our responsibility to ensure students have the necessary
qualifications and abilities to undertake a course, and have introduced even
further checks and processes at NZSCDT to verify a student's suitability for
a course and to prevent events such as this happening again."
