GENERAL: MELCA: Meridian's Mt Mercer Wind Farm begins generating power

Meridian Energy met a major milestone today with first power generated at the
Mt Mercer Wind Farm in Victoria, Australia.
The planned 64-turbine wind farm is being constructed near Ballarat in
Victoria and is scheduled for completion late 2014. Mt Mercer will have a
capacity of 131 MW, bringing Meridian's total operating portfolio in
Australia to 201 MW.
Mt Mercer is the third wind farm project that Meridian has developed in
Australia and complements its existing Mt Millar wind farm in South
Australia.
"Meridian considers Australia as the most attractive market to export its
capabilities and expertise in wind power development," says Meridian CEO Mark
Binns.
"Through innovative contractual arrangements and close co-operation with our
partners, we have demonstrated that new renewable energy projects can be
successfully delivered," says Mr Binns.
"In particular, the Federal Government's RET Scheme has provided a strong
financial incentive to invest in wind farms in Australia.
"The Mt Mercer development will also support the entry of Powershop into the
Australian retail market in Victoria. This is a great opportunity for
Victorians to support renewable energy and experience Powershop's unique
online offering," says Mr Binns.
