Alinta Energy has given the go-ahead to build a large battery in South Australia to store surplus renewable energy for release when electricity demand peaks.
The Reeves Plains battery is part of a proposed hub at the site, located about halfway between the towns of Gawler to Mallala on the Adelaide Plains, which will include a 300-megawatt gas power station.
The 500-megawatt battery will be built in two 250-megawatt stages, each with four hours of storage capacity, giving the plant a total storage capacity of 2000 megawatt-hours.
Alinta, which is thought to be exploring a potential merger with EnergyAustralia, appointed Genus to build the battery, with the modules to be supplied by China’s CATL.
The first stage of the battery, which will be able to power about 300,000 South Australian homes for up to four hours, is expected to be running by 2028.
