At the Ernest Henry deposit, gold is found primarily as tiny specks within two main areas:
Shallow Matrix: Gold is closely associated with chalcopyrite (a copper sulfide mineral) that fills the spaces between clasts (broken rock fragments) in the upper part of the orebody. Imagine a bunch of rocks with gaps in between. Gold is like tiny flecks of gold dust hiding within the copper sulfide mineral that fills those gaps.
Deeper Clasts: At greater depths, where the hot fluids interacted with the rock for a longer time, gold can also be found replacing the minerals within the clasts themselves. So, instead of being in the spaces between rocks, the gold becomes part of the existing rock fragments.
