Yes, but the local clothing & footwear industry was destroyed by the excessive wage increases brought about by the Whitlam Labor government and the ACTU in the 1970s. All those many dozens of clothing/footwear factory-ettes in the backstreets of Fitzroy and Collingwood vanished, never to return to the "once-proud manufacturing State of Victoria". Whilst we were being shot in the foot, it was a springboard for the rise of China. I was just a boy then, but I remember my Dad saying that he had to check the latest wage rates every month, they were going up that fast.
