Even on a Saturday early evening (21 August 2021), there are GNC trains that have loaded grain during the day and may soon be departing.
On the Victorian broad gauge, at Wycheproof (famous for the Korong Vale - Sea Lake line running down the centre of the Calder Highway, a la Rockhampton Queensland's Denison St that's the narrow gauge north coast railway), there 's a grain train.
In NSW (standard gauge), there's another Pacific National train for GNC stabled at the large Junee subterminal that's just out of the eponymous railway junction town, on the line to Narrandera and Griffith.
There's an empty grain train that started at Port Kembla's Inner Harbour. It's passing through the trendy 'village' of Robertson on the very scenic Unanderra to Moss Vale line that has a pronounced steep gradient. The train could end up at somewhere like Temora, Red Bend near Forbes or similar. Many possible destinations.
Another wagon rake (with locomotives) is sitting at Port Kembla's Inner Harbour, having started its journey from Cootamundra on the Sydney - Melbourne main line or another grain loading facility in the NSW Riverina or Central West.
Similarly, at the extensive Carrington facility at the Port of Newcastle NSW is another grain train set.
Another loaded Pacific National grain train from GNC's Gurley site on the Moree line has just climbed the heavily graded Ardglen Bank with its famous tunnel and should soon be edging closer to Muswellbrook on its lengthy journey to the Manildra Mills complex at Bomaderry (that most better know as 'Nowra' - the railway was never built over the river into what is now a populous rural city) on the non-locked down NSW South Coast.
At Werris Creek, the magnificently built railway station that is the junction between the Armidale and Moree lines with also a crosscountry line to Dubbo is another grain train. As with the one ex Gurley it has to thread its way to Carrington through numerous Hunter Valley coal trains.
An empty grain train is between Gunnedah and Boggabri on the Moree line while yet another is approaching Narrabri.
On the lengthy Narrabri West - Walgett grain terminal line (due to floods, the last section across a bridge into Walgett town has long been closed, but I once travelled there on a NSW Government Railway's rail motor), a further train is sitting.
There didn't appear to be any GNC grain trains in Queensland but it's almost always the smallest of the total crops by far.
As usual, I'll have missed some but delightful isn't it that not long before the next crop (God willing) starts filling silos and perhaps bunkers, GNC is still carting bountiful export and domestic grain from almost all of its 'territory'?
